1. Ernst & Young

Headquartered in London, England, Ernst & Young is one of the so-called Big Four accounting firms. The company’s activities consist mainly in doing financial audit work for other corporations.

Additionally, the company is actively involved in areas such as actuarial consulting, as well as due-diligence research for mergers and acquisitions.

Most of the major U.S. accounting firms have been in a hiring frenzy lately. Ernst and Young is no exception: In March it announced that it is looking to hire 7,000 employees from college campuses (2,500 of whom will be interns) and an additional 6,000 experienced workers.

The company is currently celebrating the 25th anniversary of its “Entrepreneur of the Year” program. For the last several months the company has been announcing its regional winners, with the national title to be awarded in November.

2. UnitedHealth Group

UnitedHealth Group currently provides health insurance servicesto over 75 million people worldwide. The company recently has been actively involved in creating several technologicaladvancements in the health care field, including the development of video conferencing systems for patient/doctor communication, the creation of electronic health records systems, and the release of an iPhone app to locate participating physicians.

3. Chrysler – Mopar

Although the term “Mopar” has come into use for any Chrysler-branded product, it is officially the parts-and-service group for the Chrysler Group, which includes Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram brands in North America. Mopar is based in Center Line, Mich.

Pietro Gorlier, CEO of Mopar and former vice president of Fiat, says Fiat saw a great deal of untapped potential in the Mopar brand. Fiat took control of the Chrysler Group in 2009, and recentlyannounced a new management structure as part of the merger.

The company recently reached an agreement with the United Auto Workers for a new four-year contract. The contract is set to create approximately 2,100 jobs. This is the first contract agreed upon since Chrysler’s management shifted to Fiat SpA.

4. Walmart

With over 2 million employees worldwide, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is the largest private employer in the United States. The company has steadily grown since founder Sam Walton opened the first Walmart-branded store in 1962.

Starting as a discount retail operation, the company has grown to include a line of supercenters and a significant grocery operation.

The company is now so prevalent that over 170 million customers visit Walmart stores around the world each week. In addition to its Walmart-branded activities, the company owns and operates the Sam’s Club wholesale centers.

Starting this year, the company plans to open 400 to 500 of its new Walmart Express grocery stores across the nation. The plan should allow the company to expand into neighborhoods that are not quite big enough for a regular-size Walmart.

5. Aflac

The company was founded in 1955 by brothers John, Paul and Bill Amos. In 1964 the company pioneered the concept of “cluster-selling” insurance, in which sales agents would go to corporate offices to give groups of workers insurance presentations, as opposed to presenting each person individually.

In 1990 Daniel Amos was named CEO of the company, and in 2000 he made history when he introduced the world to the Aflac Duck. The world-famous fowl now has his own place on the Madison Avenue Walk of Fame and is a universally recognized icon of American popular culture.

The company was recently named by IDG’s Computerworld as one of the Best Places to Work in Information Technology for 2011. This is the 12th time that Aflac has achieved the distinction of being one of the top 100 organizations in terms of compensation, benefits, training and career development.

6. AT&T Retail

With over 96 million mobile customers, AT&T Wireless is the 20th-largest mobile phone service provider in the world, andaccording to Forbes, the 14th-largest company in the world by market value.

The company’s mobile division is headquartered in Dekalb, Ga., just outside of Atlanta. Between the years of 2005 and 2007, the company acquired Cingular Wireless and BellSouth. Until recently, AT&T Wireless was the exclusive carrier of Apple’s popular iPhone line in the United States.

AT&T is now one of three major wireless carriers, alongside Verizon and Sprint, to feature Apple’s new iPhone 4S. The updated phone hit 1 million pre-orders (among the three carriers) within 24 hours of its announcement. The 4S has now sold out for pre-order on each carrier.

7. Siemens

Siemens AG is a leading provider of electrical engineering and electronics services to the health care, energy and manufacturing industries. Siemens currently employs roughly 405,000 workers in 190 countries, 60,000 of whom work in the company’s offices in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

In March, the company announced plans to invest $135 million tobuild a plant in Charlotte, N.C., that would manufacture large-scale gas turbines. The plant is expected to create 825 engineering and manufacturing jobs over the next five years, at an average annual wage of $64,000.

Siemens has announced plans to hire around 3,000 workers for their U.S. operations in 2011, about 600 of which are expected to be in the areas of sales, marketing and communications. Many of the positions will be focused on recent college graduates, and the company has developed a fast-track development program to quickly train grads for leadership positions.

8. ADT

ADT originally was founded as the American District Telegraph company in 1874. Over time, the company evolved from delivering messages by telegraph to providing home security services. The company now provides both residential and commercial service to roughly 230 major U.S. markets.

Last year the company released ADT Pulse, which allows homeowners to manage their security system, as well as regulate thermostat and lighting levels in their home, via smartphone app.

The product has become the focus of a major marketing push for the company. According to CEpro.com, the company has invested more money in promoting remote home security, since the product’s launch, than the rest of the entire industry has in the last 25 years!

In April, the company added a high-profile client when ADT became the official security provider at Boston’s Fenway Park. The deal features IP-based cameras placed throughout the park to protect Red Sox fans, stadium employees and team members.

9. Chase

As the retail and commercial banking arm of financial services company JPMorgan Chase and Co., Chase is one of the largest banks in the United States, in terms of both deposits and market-capitalization. This qualifies Chase as one of the so-called Big Four U.S. Banks. As a whole, JPMorgan Chase employs over 200,000 employees in 60 countries around the world.

The company recently named Andrew Pilkington as the director of Chase’s card services. Pilkington has been with the company since 2008, and is also the president of J.P. Morgan Bank Canada.

10. Comcast

Comcast is one of the nation’s leading providers of cable TV, Internet and phone services. The company owns a majority stake in NBC Universal, which operates the NBC and Telemundo broadcast networks. The Comcast Corporation is also the parent company of Comcast-Spectator, which owns both the Philadelphia 76ers and Flyers sports franchises.

Earlier this year, the company announced the release of theirXfinity Signature Support service, which provides 24/7 technical support to a wide range of products that Comcast customers use to connect to their services.

Comcast recently received approval for their proposed acquisition of NBC Universal. The courts will oversee the deal for two years, as there is some worry regarding content distribution under the new ownership.
